History 7-Eleven was formed as an amateur cycling team in 1981 by Ochowicz, a 29-year-old former Olympic cyclist from the U.S., who was married to Olympic speed skating gold medalist Sheila Young . Their first model was developed in 1978 by two British Columbians that put wide tires, straight bars and internal five-speed gears on a Nishiki road bike. Rocky Mountain bikes are widely used at the professional level. Rocky Mountain Bicycles had its beginnings in a Vancouver bike store in 1978, when two men modified Nishiki road bikes with wider tires, a straight handlebar, and five-speed gears. They founded the company in 1981 as Rocky Mountain Bicycles Ltd. along with Grayson Bain, who would serve as the company’s president until 1997. Working with Tom Ritchey, they produced their first bike in 1982 – the first Canadian-made mountain bike. Rocky Mountain began selling bikes outside of Vancouver in 1985, and made its first international sale in 1989.
